Binta Zulfia, a Master of Economics student at FEB UM, has been defended her thesis titled “Navigating Sustainability: Understanding the Relationship Between Inclusive Economic Growth, Institutional Quality, and Environmental Degradation in BRICS Plus Countries” on Tuesday, 6 January 2026.

The examination committee includes Prof. Dr. Etty Soesilowati, M.Si., Dr. Inayati Nuraini Dwiputri, S.Si, M.Sc. Prof. Dr. Wen-Chi Huang (National Pingtung University of Science and Technology), and Thomas Soseco, S.E., M.Sc, Ph.D.

Binta’s thesis examines the relationship between economic growth and the environment by using inclusive economic growth concept through the Environmental Inclusive-Growth Kuznets Curve (EIKC) hypothesis for nine BRICS countries spanning 2000 to 2023. Empirical findings using a static panel Fixed Effect Model confirm the significance of the EIKC hypothesis among BRICS Plus economies and signaling policymakers in other emerging countries to prioritise inclusive growth and avoid sacrificing it for short-term, rapid expansion, as sustainability ultimately takes precedence (TS).
